A few months ago, I received an interesting email, followed
by a call, from White House staff. They had heard about WeMakeItSafer from the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and asked if I would be willing to
give a “Ted-like talk” about our technology at their upcoming Safety Datapalooza. The event was, itself, a rewarding way to
share the success of WeMakeItSafer with a broader audience (see video of my
talk below), but that trip to DC also launched a whole new world of opportunity
for me as a technology entrepreneur and for WeMakeItSafer.
Connecting with the US CTO, Todd Park, and US CIO, Steve VanRoekel, inspired me to get more involved with the work they and the rest of President Obama’s staff are doing in three main areas:
- Open Government Data,
- Women and Diversity in Technology, and
- Startup Policy
I now have participated in several roundtable discussions regarding each of these issues, both in Washington DC and here in the Valley, and can say that I am excited about where we are headed as a nation. The work to be done can feel somewhat daunting at times, but Todd and Steve are amassing an impressive group of influential thought-leaders and change-makers to help lead the charge. I am happy to be among them and to be doing my part to ensure that innovation remains a top priority for our country.
